The House Council met at 130pm today to discuss issues related to Orchard. The House Council is an opportunity for Orchard boys to think about how to improve facilities and voice concerns.
The School Council representatives, Kabir Dhillon and George Lawley will then represent our views on the School Council.
The following issues were raised:
1. Registration at lunchtime- prefer it to be the same as the morning.
2. Can the sports hall be open over lunch for table tennis- especially when weather is wet. CEA to ask.
3. Better pictures in the junior day room needed.
4. Clock needed in day room.
5. Year 12 requested to be allowed to do football Tuesday 5-6 if academic work up to date. Agreed by CEA
6. Can Orchard have a House hoodie/ tracksuit this year? Costs to be looked into.
7. Request for chess, draughts and other games to be available in day room.
8. Can TV in junior day room be replaced with a flat screen.
9. Year group trips/outings- is this possible? CEA to look at costs, but yes. Year 9 will have a trip later this term. Year groups to come up with suggestions.
The House Council also discusses how to raise money for charity. Our local charity is the Chiltern Centre which works with disabled children in Henley. The Council will discuss ideas for fund raising at its next meeting.

Week 2
Week Two- View from ourYear 9 blogger: George Lawley
As our first full week began,We were all rather tired and hoping to get a good night’s sleep at least for one day. We all knew that we had fixtures some time in the week and we were all rather excited. On Wednesday the A and B team played a stunning first match against Forest School. The week continued with a rather tired group of teenage boys all looking forward to the exeat weekend coming up. On the Saturday we played Reading Bluecoat, including the A, B and C teams. We all faced a tough side but were all defeated. we showed the legendary Shiplake spirit and fought on to the end.
We are all looking forward to the four day week and our fixtures at St Edwards School Oxford, along with house football team which should be decided soon. Our Year 9 parents are looking forward to another fun reception on Thursday evening. Our Year 12 mentors will be there too. Have a good week.

A new Orchard Year 9- George Lawley- Reflects on a Tumultuous First Week
Year 9 have had a fantastic start to the term. We arrived on Monday a day before the rest of the whole school arrived. We were allowed to spend the morning in the prep and common room before meeting our Tutors for this year.
On Tuesday we went through our first set of tests in the Great Hall. Most people were very confident with their exam ability. On Wednesday our lessons began splitting up and getting to meet other boys in different houses. The bus service also began with this being the first time for many to catch a school bus. On Thursday we were treated to a night the famous “Island adventure” cooking our own food and making our own shelters. It was a long night!
Friday we were treated to an afternoon of fun and games consisting of Drama, team work and golf. We then ate a barbeque cooked by Mr Seymour. We are looking forward to our next week hoping for the same fun next week.

Confident Start by New Orchard Year 9 Pupils
Orchard's 17 new Year 9 boys- pictured here- have made a confident start at Shiplake. A hectic but exciting first week saw them explore the delights of the Shiplake island, building shelters, and cooking their own suppers on a bbq, with variable results. A mostly dry night ensued, and they were grateful to return to civilization the next morning and sample the delights of a cooked breakfast at the College.
On Friday they joined in with their Duty Teams for the House Activity afternoon, an action packed session which involved creating a drama sketch, a blind obstacle course, chipping golf balls, crazy table tennis, orienteering, and a command task. This was a great opportunity to get to know older pupils in their team and in the House.
All will be involved in rugby matches this week- some on Wednesday, at home v Forest School, and the mighty C team will make its debut with the A and B teams away at Reading Bluecoat on Saturday. Come on Shiplake! Parents are more than welcome to watch the matches, and boys can go home afterwards with parents in Wednesday and Saturday provided Mr Curtis or Mr Alcock is informed.
